If the Nexus One had a face, it would be a sad one, as this week Google have received their last shipment of the smartphone. This means that from now on, the Nexus One will only be available via networks and not through Google at all.
Both Verizon and Sprint in the USA have cancelled their orders for the Nexus One, leaving the phone without a US home. Here in Europe, Vodafone are the official Nexus One network, and according to the post it’s sold in Korea too, plus they don’t rule out the possibility of adding other networks or territories in the future.
The irony here is that originally, Google wanted to bypass the networks and sell the American public an unlocked phone, leaving them free to choose their own operator and tariff. We’re very familiar with the practice here, but it’s something of a rarity there, and nobody seemed to get it aside from the geeks and Google fans. Perhaps Google always knew they wouldn’t win and that the Nexus One was needed simply to push the Android name as much as possible.
Still, we should count ourselves lucky that we can still buy a Nexus One easily!
